Alien Prosthetic Application for ZDF Streamergarten

The Brief

For ZDF Streamergarten an alien character was required: not just an application, but the complete look from head to toe. The multi-piece foam latex prosthetic was sourced at short notice through a fellow SFX artist, so the design had to be developed around the existing pieces.

In television production, clean edges, accurate colour matching and continuity decide the image. Movement, perspiration and long shooting days change every transition, which makes continuous checking part of the work.

The Process

The character design came first: a look that met the client's expectations while letting the available prosthetic pieces work naturally. I assembled the costume to match, so that prosthetics and costume would read as one figure rather than two halves.

On the shooting day the foam latex prosthetic was applied and adapted to the performer's facial structure, then individually colour-matched until prosthetic and skin formed a single surface.

Throughout the day the work continued: checking the fit, reworking edges, touch-ups.

The Result

A coherent alien character from head to toe that holds in close-up and in moving footage. Because SFX and costume came from one hand, there was no break between prosthetics and figure, and the look stayed consistent across the production.
