The challenge

Live events place particular demands on make-up. The characters have to look convincing from different distances, last for many hours and hold their effect despite movement, stage lighting and changing temperatures.

Since prosthetics were deliberately avoided, the challenge was to create depth, aging and sculptural facial forms using make-up techniques alone.

The execution

Carefully placed highlights and shadows created the impression of more pronounced features, sunken cheeks and striking bone structures. The character make-up was completed with custom coloring, dirt and blood effects as well as vampire teeth and contact lenses.

This produced a range of horror characters without the need for any additional prosthetics.

The result

The finished characters were convincing thanks to their sculptural effect and strong presence in direct contact with the audience. Although only make-up techniques were used, the result gave a convincing three-dimensional impression that lent the figures more expression and depth.

The combination of character make-up, vampire teeth and contact lenses created a coherent overall look and worked reliably throughout the entire event.

Behind the scenes

Not every character transformation needs silicone prosthetics or elaborate special effects. With a solid understanding of anatomy, light and shadow, striking transformations can already be achieved through classic make-up techniques.

For live events in particular, this approach offers advantages, since it is light, comfortable to wear and highly effective at the same time.

With precise light and shadow painting, anatomical understanding and careful coloring, sculptural effects can be created that convey the impression of a three-dimensional facial change. Completed with vampire teeth and contact lenses, this produced a convincing horror character for live use.
